PROCEDURE TEXT
A. Social Function
A procedure
text is compiled to describe how something is accomplished through a sequence
of actions or steps. In addition, a procedure is a text that
gives instructions for doing something so that way it can be done.
We usually
find this text in some kinds, for examples: recipes, the way to use washing
machine, rules for games, science experiments, or the way to operate a
computer. Most of our daily activities are related with
procedures. Therefore, we should know and understand what a procedure text is,
how we can practice and use it.
B. Generic Structure
1.
Goal / aim : about what is the
purpose which we want to do.
- This may be the title of the text.
- This may be an introductory paragraph.
2.
Materials : about materials or utensils needed for completing the procedure.
- This may be a list.
- This may be a paragraph.
- This step may be left out in some procedure. It is only optional, not for all procedural texts.
3. Steps : a series steps oriented to achieve the aim / goal.
- Number or time words (first, second, now, next, then, after this, etc) can be to show the sequence.
- Usually the steps begin with an imperative (Verb 1) such as prepare, cook, add, mix, insert, etc
C. Grammatical Features
1. Using
Simple Present Tense.
2. Using
an imperative form, for examples: prepare mushrooms, add some sugar, etc.
3. Using
mainly of temporal conjunction (connectives) for examples to indicate sequence
especially in spoken text like First . .
. or firstly . . . , Second . . .
or secondly . . . , and to indicate sequence in written text
such as: then . . . , after that . . . , etc.
4. Using
action verb (material process), for examples: take, put, cut, pour, etc.
5. Using
adverbials to clarify the time, place, or manner. For examples: wait for
fifteen minutes, mix thoroughly, stirring gently, etc.
6. Generalized
human is “you”, but with implicitly. For example; add salt and grind all spices
(It is mean that the subject is “you”, so it is not really important to be
written).
